The Difference Between Twitter & Facebook - For Your Relatives

My sister-in-law is visiting from Vancouver and asked me to explain the difference between Twitter and Facebook.

As I tried to explain what I saw as the difference, I found I was delving way too deep into webcentric language and was absolutely failing in helping her (a very mainstream user of Facebook). Then I turned to Twitter.

I posted the following update: “I’m trying to explain the difference between Twitter and Facebook to my sister-in-law. What’s the easiest, simplest way to do that?” around an hour ago and have since gotten a bunch of good responses.

Below are are a bunch of good ones. I’ll update as I get more.

@techdiva66 twitter is short, character-limited updates & facebook gives you more options for communicating as well as games & apps

@billiegirltoo twitter is up to the second raw thought. facebook allows editing. twitter has a personal feeling

@jpurnell twitter is lower-stakes status updates

@brew7vwp on twitter you talk to strangers you like, on facebook you talk to friends you barely remember

@victordlt Twitter is Facebook in KISS mode (Keep it Simple Stupid). More Simple and Faster.

@calindrome Twitter is a cocktail party; Facebook is recess.

@Goose Facebook is Twitter for people with Internet agoraphobia.

@JD_Southard Facebook is so 2008. Twitter is a social networking experiment in real time connecting people thru a limited # of characters

@ahachmi twitter is where you can vent your mood, sure fbook does the same, but in Twitter it is nothing but the venting of thoughts.

@MyNameisRazzle Facebook Status without the Facebook.

@victordlt Twitter is Facebook with about 10,000 less settings.

@tilga “its like facebook but w/o all the apps. just the status updates” is what i say… GL.

@craiggav Twitter is Facebook without any of the annoying quizzes.

@Adamw13 twitter is only status messages none of the superflous stuff

@ThatsTwit twitter is up to the second raw thought. facebook allows editing. twitter has a personal feeling http://twurl.nl/egr0mw

@bderico Facebook is more about you than it is about what you are doing. Twitter’s updates are more frequent and carry a bit more.

@thawrite1 its facebook with just the status msgs

Engaging Audiences With Twitter - CNN Doing Something Right

I’ve been enjoying CNN’s recent forays into social media and watching them both struggle and succeed with how it’s used.

Rick Sanchez’s new show on CNN launced today called “Rick Sanchez Direct” (no website guys?) and it’s going to be one to watch. Real time interaction isn’t something that’s been done too often with the internet masses and I’m not exactly sure how they’re vetting info as it comes in.

Rick’s twitter account is here and worth following if for no other reason than to experiement in being part of the conversation.

Oh, BTW, obviously this is something I find very interesting and think I may try to find a way in include aspects of it in Late Night or at least convince TPTB to try it. Going to be a lot of fun experimenting.

Cringe Video - Your Next Big Addicition

I love bad TV. God knows I’ve watched enough of it (and some would say made enough of it) to be considered an expert.

For a long time, I thought about starting a bad TV website. There’s just so much of it out there on YouTube, sitting undiscovered. Sure, the occasional gem gets picked up by BestWeekEver or by us at Attack of the Show but no one was out there really setting the bar for finding the best clips on a consistent basis. Until now.

Meet Cringe Video - the best YouTube channel ever. You’re welcome.

Some personal favorites:

Ticke The Ivories - PA Christian Piano Instruction at it’s best

Book Rack Drama - The Librarian in this is amazing.

And the Roger Sandersan show - perhaps the worst stand-up of all time.

Internet At Its Finest - Fan Made Videos For Beck’s Timebomb

I know I’m probably way behind on this but I was puttering around on YouTube tonight (on Apple TV no less!) checking out some old Beck videos when I happened to notice just a shitload of fan made videos for “Timebomb” the single he released strictly to iTunes last year.

Normally fanmade videos on the internet aren’t something to blog about but somehow I got sucked into watching about 15 of these and started enjoying each one more than the next.

I think it has something with the song (it’s monotonous yet joyful) or maybe it’s just the creativity of the Beck fans - either way it me feel good.A few of the best ones below.

Excellence in Papercraft:

Just Two Guys & a Staircase:

Troll Vs. Warm Fuzzies:

Guy in Bookstore:

Naruto Has A Timebomb:

Timebomb Kids:

Timebomb Mom:

And then there’s High Five Hollywood.

The Most Depressing SuperBowl Commerical Ever

Not only have none of these things been solve in the time we’d hoped (AIDS in 2k4? Really?) but the big payoff is Christopher Reeve getting to walk again. And we all know how that ended.

Mark Cuban Pissed At Deadspin, Questions Blogger Ethics

Mark CubanMark Cuban isn’t happy.

Deadspin editor Will Leitch interviewed him for a magazine piece and then set about blogging the interview for Deadspin-sister site Valleywag. Now Mark’s questioning his ethics.

It’s an interesting debate. Does someone have the right to blog/write/publicly discuss their experiences BTS of an interview that they did for another magazine? Without telling the subject?

One things for sure - the Gawker empire continues to make noise by being pushy in ever more unique ways.

Michel Gondry Curates YouTube + Michel Gondry Nose Picking

I like Michel Gondry, both his films and as a persona. He’s been able to hold onto all of the best aspects of childhood and integrate them into his daily life. Creativity, wonder, observation, play all run amok in his work.

And he’s curating YouTube today!

Three Unusual Blog Posts Nick Denton’s New Pay Scale Hath Wrought

So things are a little nutty over at the Gawker Empire.

Most of us already know that there was a shake-up at Gawker recently, mostly over what seems to be a relatively smart change in the way that Gawker bloggers are being paid. Essentially it moves them from a pay-per-post system to what amount to a pay-per-attention structure. Which might make perfect sense in the world of quality = pageviews and/or readership.

However, there have been some interesting turns of events as the bloggers there look to cash in on the system. And thanks to Gawker’s open policy of posting page views, we can see what each of these attempts might be pulling in for the bloggers in terms of extra scratch.

First, Nick (not Denton) Douglas at Gawker posted about 2girls1cup, goatse and a number of other not-so-nice internet memes. The crowd there (at Gawker) did not take to this well and had their say in the comments, going so far as to continue the discussion on other blogs. To me, the post seemed relatively harmless and perhaps was just ill-timed to be connected to the page view change.

TOTAL VIEWS TO DATE: 27, 514 VERDICT: Meh.

Next, Gizmodo has drawn the ire of the tech blogging community for what’s been dubbed ‘Gizmodo-gate’, the use of a TV-B-Gone device to turn off of several TVs (some during demos) at CES 2008. While this ’scandal’ continues to play out and the blogger who filmed/edited the bit has now been banned from CES, he’ll most likely end up with the equivalent of the ‘monthly sales plaque’ because people are watching.

TOTAL VIEWS TO DATE: 558,090+ VERDICT: Bingo. Traffic baby.

And finally, something that jumped out at me today, a post from the mostly-awesome Jezebel that pretty much live blogs an intimate encounter directly following a long day at AEE, the Adult Entertainment Expo. Now as a reader of nearly all the Gawker blogs, including at times Fleshbot (the adult media themed Gawker property), I find it’s still relatively rare you have the opportunity to read such a raw and unfiltered look at a personal intimate encounter (or if you will a PIE). That said, I read it and I’d read it again.

TOTAL VIEWS TO DATE: 24,129 VERDICT: On the way up. Probably will at least triple today.

Anyways, it’ll be interesting to watch what else comes out of this. Maybe Nick, happy with the nest egg he’s made, is just sitting back watching this whole thing play out as some giant human experiment. It’s certainly kinda freaky.

The Littlest Hustler Or What NY Does To Overprivledged Kids

And by ‘what it does’ I mean ‘how it transforms’. Which is both a good and a bad thing.

But holy crap, this is a story.

Mr. T & Shatner Shill For WoW

Blizzard has way too much money now.

These videos are proof.

On a side note: I wonder who was on the short list for these spots. I’ve got a theory deep inside that there are like ten people that speak directly to nerds. These are two of them.
