Engaging Audiences With Twitter - CNN Doing Something Right

I’ve been enjoying CNN’s recent forays into social media and watching them both struggle and succeed with how it’s used.

Rick Sanchez’s new show on CNN launced today called “Rick Sanchez Direct” (no website guys?) and it’s going to be one to watch. Real time interaction isn’t something that’s been done too often with the internet masses and I’m not exactly sure how they’re vetting info as it comes in.

Rick’s twitter account is here and worth following if for no other reason than to experiement in being part of the conversation.

Oh, BTW, obviously this is something I find very interesting and think I may try to find a way in include aspects of it in Late Night or at least convince TPTB to try it. Going to be a lot of fun experimenting.

Why can’t John McCain actually tell Americans what his plans are for fixing the economy and the failing health care system, instead of bashing Barack Obama? Talk about negative campaigning. All you hear from the
Maverick is the latest associations of Obama. I might be registered as a Republican, however, there is no way that I am going to vote for this grumpy old muppet!!!

It seems like they’re copying and pasting Twitter replies in Microsoft Word before displaying it on Rick’s Monitor. Probably have a couple interns combing the Tweets. Then, I’m guessing Rick’ll say “This was just sent in 10 seconds ago from ______” even though it was actually vetted several minutes prior. I guess they figure, who’s gonna call them out on it? The general effect, and the principle of the real-time dialogue is still retained. I still enjoy the show. Glad CNN’s one of the one’s spearheading this thing.

Once, a long, long time ago before people started paying me to be a writer…I was a bartender. I worked the day shift at a very, very nice hotel in Beverly Hills. We considered day shifts to be “the graveyard.” So one day Brandoff Tartikoff strolls in with a few minions in tow. By now he was gone from NBC and was Chairman of Such and Such at Paramount Pictures. So they sit, order a few sodas and wait, and wait, and wait, ultimately for Billy Bob Thornton whose, “Sling Blade” had just come out and before he won the Oscar. Billy Bob looked like shit to me but Brandon definitely never noticed. So they start talking about this ‘n that and Billy Bob quietly orders a Bushmill’s on ice just to get through the tedium of this thing. He slung ‘em back, I kept serving it up, and Brandon kept talking. By the end of the meeting Billy Bob was kinda trashed and making jokes to me on the side. At its conclusion all shook hands about exactly what who even knew. Billy Bob stumbled out the front door me having had a front door guy get him a cab. Brandon asked for the check and never even looked to see exactly how many of those Bushmill’s on ice Billy Bob had destroyed.

He signed thebBill, left me a nice tip and remarked enthusiastically how great the meeting went.

Yeah, I know Brandon was some sort of genius and you wanna know more about him. Well, here’s more I guess.
